Using the Database

Using materials in simulations

Each material in the library has a fully standalone material definition suitable for simulations using the Radiance engine. These material definitions can be copied-and-pasted directly into RAD format files.

Instructions for how to include these materials using the DIVA-for-Rhino Radiance interface can be found here. Groundhog has a documentation webpage dedicated to materials. For other Radiance front ends such as LightStanza, SPOT Pro, LiVi, OpenStudio, Honeybee and others, please visit their respective websites. Independent physical parameters listed on the individual materials pages such as reflectance, transmittance and specularity should allow for the information to be translated into other, non-Radiance lighting simulation tools.


Search by parameters

Several parameters can be used to narrow down the materials available in the database,


Search by color

A color search is performed by selecting a RGB color either by a color picker or by entering the color primaries in the below format,

RGB colors are then translated into the L*a*b* color space. The euclidian distance between the color selected and all other colors in the database can be controlled by adjusting the Max Color Distance (L*a*b* color space) slider. This distance is directly related to color similarity. All results under the Top Results section are sorted by ascending color similarity.


Search by location of measurement

To search by measurement location, simply select a location on Earth by clicking on the interactive map or entering a pair of latitude and longitude coordinates. The Max Geodistance parameter is the radius in km for which materials measured in nearby locations will be returned.
